How Dental Implants Work

Dental implants are made out of titanium, and they are designed to mimic a natural tooth root. The implant is surgically placed into the gum and jaw where your missing tooth used to be, and a small piece protrudes out above the gum line. Over time, the implant heals and bonds with your jaw. Once the site completely heals, a restoration (typically a dental crown) will be attached to the implant, replacing your missing tooth permanently. When properly placed, dental implants have a lifespan of 30+ years.

Single-Tooth vs. Full-Arch Implants

Your Restoration Options

In most cases, a dental implant is used to support one dental crown and restore a single missing tooth. However, if you are missing many or all of your natural teeth, a series of 4-6 dental implants can be used to restore your smile with a permanent fixed dental bridge or a removable implant denture (overdenture).

What to Expect

The Dental Implant Placement Process

To prepare for your placement surgery, Dr. Kimball will take x-rays and impressions of your teeth, and he will use these images of your mouth to design your personalized implant plan. During your placement appointment, your mouth will be cleaned and numbed, and an incision will be made in your gum and jaw where your missing tooth used to be. Next, the implant will be placed precisely, according to your implant plan, and the area will be cleaned and sutured shut. This completes the first step of the procedure, and you will come back to our office when your gums have healed.

Restoring Your Smile

The Implant Restoration Process

Once your implant has been surgically placed, it will take about 3-6 months for your mouth to completely heal. During this period, your dental implant will go through the process of “osseointegration.” This is the process that bonds the titanium to your natural jaw bone.

During this time, Dr. Kimball will work with a dental lab to create your dental restoration, such as a crown, bridge, or a set of implant-supported dentures. Once your mouth has healed completely, you’ll come back in for a follow-up, and Dr. Kimball will test the fit of your dental implant restoration. Once your restoration fits perfectly, it will be bonded into place, completing the procedure.

Are Dental Implants Right For Me?

Candidates for Dental Implants

If you are missing one or more teeth and want a permanent solution to restore your smile, dental implants may be a good option for you. Candidates for dental implants should have healthy gums and a healthy jaw. Nonsmokers are also preferred candidates because tobacco use significantly decreases the success rate of dental implants.
